I recently visited Beaumont USP. Before visiting, I did a little research on it and found that it has been one of the most violent prisons in the Federal Prison System.
At one point in the 1980’s, most of the prisoners had to be transferred due to the amount of violence on a daily basis. Currently, they have been on lock down for violence almost one week out of every four. The problem with that is, if an inmates’ family comes to visit, no matter how far they have traveled, they can not visit if the facility is on lockdown.
Wow! How is that fair to the family? they did not do anything and they may be visiting someone who had nothing to do with the incident that caused the lockdown. Well, yes, they are prisoners, but I am talking about the effect on the family. How much did they spend on gas or airfare or hotel to visit? Who will reimburse them? No one!
Incarcerated in this facility are some of the worst gangs around. There is the Black Hand (Mexican Mafia) Texas Aryan Brotherhood and the Boston Contingency. These inmates should get together and decide that the violence is not worth it because it ends up harming their loved ones. Not to mention, they get locked down too. I say this because it is apparent that the lockdowns have not solved the problem. Where are the people responsible for the prison? What measures are they taking to prevent the violence? What ever it is, it is not enough. They need to look for better solutions.
