Clayton Lockett kidnapped and shot Stephanie Neiman. she was only nineteen years old. After he shot her, he had an accomplish bury her alive. Did he deserve the death penalty. Absolutely. He had been in trouble with the law since he was nineteen and in my mind had no redeeming qualities. Wht he did was abominable. In fact, he should have been executed sooner. Why do taxpayers have to support those on death row for years while they appeal? He had been convicted in 2000…nearly 14 years ago while his family waited for justice and Americans paid for his food, lodging and court costs.
But, his execution should not have been botched. After receiving his lethal injection, instead of dying, he had a heart attack 20 minutes later. He was not given a cocktail including sodium thiopental, but instead a cocktail of midazolam, vecuronium bromide, and potassium chloride. If given enough potassium chloride, it will stop your heart so one wonders why the dose did not.
Am I sympathetic with Clayton? No, I just feel that the botched execution should be remedied so others to follow do not have the same experience. We are a nation that is supposed to be civilized and botched executions are not civilized.
